Fibre Optic Technology

The advantages of using fibre optics for measurement and monitoring in construction are

Passive component
High life time (>20 years)
Stable in time
No calibration required

Performance
Up to 40 sensors in 1 fiber
Less connection lines
Excellent sensitivity
High fatigue resistance
Long distance measurements (20+ km)
Measurement based on light
Immune against electro-magnetic radiation
Explosion safe

Size
Low weight
Small diameter (< ¼ mm)
High integration and imbedding capabilities

Fibre Optic technology for railway monitoring is available in the UK using fibre optic embedded in geomembrane. The membrane supplied by Tencate has embedded sensors, which measure realtime , strain within the structure it is placed. The product Geo- Detect is a proven system. Please contact us for more details.

We are currently running a research project on the use of fibre optics for measuring inclination and have installed two chains of sensors spaced at 1.5m centres on a 30m inclinometer tube within a significant wall construction in London. The installation took 1 day and readings have been stable and very meaningful so far. The details of the research will be published in the summer of next year.
